GlobalWafers and SEMI Join Forces for Earth Day 2025
Advancing Carbon Reduction, Achieving Net-Zero Coexistence

GlobalWafers, the world’s third-largest semiconductor wafer manufacturer and a founding member of the SEMI Global Semiconductor Climate Consortium (SCC), marks its third consecutive year partnering with SEMI in support of Earth Day on April 22. In response to the 2025 Earth Day event theme “Go Green, More Clean: Advancing Carbon Reduction, Achieving Net-Zero Coexistence” , GlobalWafers is taking actions to advance sustainable development and foster a better future for both business and the planet.

The theme for Earth Day 2025, “Our Power, Our Planet,” emphasizes the importance of collective public action in accelerating the transition to renewable energy and building a sustainable future. Recognizing energy transition as a cornerstone of climate action, GlobalWafers has proactively advanced its commitment toward this goal. In 2022, the Company officially joined the RE100 initiative and has since continued to strengthen its green manufacturing efforts. At the same time, it has actively developed in-house solar power projects, signed Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), acquired Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), and leveraged the vertically integrated green energy capabilities of its parent company, Sino-American Silicon Products Inc. (SAS). Guided by a comprehensive RE100 roadmap, GlobalWafers is steadily increasing its use of green electricity and progressing toward the full adoption of 100% renewable energy.

GlobalWafers also recognizes the significant impact of climate change on business operations and the value chain. In 2025, the Company continues to enhance energy-saving practices in production and expand its use of renewable energy, while collaborating with upstream and downstream partners to develop resilient carbon reduction strategies and action plans. Through systematic greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories based on ISO 14064-1 across its major global sites, GlobalWafers effectively manages GHG-related risks and identifies opportunities for reduction. The company has also implemented ISO 14001 Environmental Management and ISO 50001 Energy Management systems, integrating R&D innovation, process optimization, and renewable energy transition to drive comprehensive sustainability actions covering carbon, energy, water, and waste management.

GlobalWafers has made concrete progress in carbon reduction, including the following achievements:

  • Continuously improving energy efficiency at its manufacturing sites through a wide range of energy-saving measures. In 2024, a total of 81 new energy-saving programs were implemented across its global sites. These initiatives are expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 6,240.33 metric tons of CO2e per year.
  • GlobalWafers’ Danish site constructed a solar power park adjacent to the site, which began operation in January 2025. It becomes the world’s first semiconductor ingot manufacturing site powered entirely by 100% self-generated green electricity, with surplus power fed back into the local grid, marking a milestone in the Group’s green manufacturing efforts.
  • Solar capacity was expanded at the Taisil branch in Taiwan and the facility in Korea, with projected annual generation exceeding 2.6 million kWh of green electricity, which is expected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 1,250 metric tons per year.
  • GlobalWafers’ wholly owned subsidiaries, Sunrise PV Four Co. and Sunrise PV Electric Power Co., Ltd. are dedicated to providing renewable energy services and advancing related technologies. They actively invest in the development, construction, and operation of solar power plants. As of the end of 2024, the total installed capacity of GlobalWafers-owned solar power plants reached 49.7 MW, with an estimated annual power generation of 60.3 million kWh, which is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 29,787 metric tons of CO2e per year, equivalent to the carbon absorption capacity of 76 Daan Forest Parks.
  • New plants and production lines constructed by GlobalWafers have incorporated energy-saving equipment from the design stage, and adopted a variety of green solutions to further increase the use of renewable energy.

In addition, GlobalWafers actively promotes carbon reduction engagement with stakeholders across the value chain. GlobalWafers hosts its Supplier Day to communicate its carbon reduction goals and strategies, classifies major raw material suppliers based on their carbon emissions, and sets clear expectations regarding carbon footprint disclosure, implementation timelines, and reduction targets. On the downstream side, GlobalWafers has initiated engagement with key customers on decarbonization planning and alignment with the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Additionally, by participating in joint industry conferences organized by SEMI, the company collaborates with end customers to align and integrate carbon management strategies, working together to build a resilient, low-carbon semiconductor supply chain.

GlobalWafers remains committed to integrating process optimization with renewable energy deployment, driving green manufacturing and energy transition forward. Through concrete decarbonization actions, GlobalWafers works hand-in-hand with global partners toward the vision of “Advancing Carbon Reduction, Achieving Net-Zero Coexistence,” paving the way toward a sustainable future.
